Giving Day for Apes 2024
Join Us in Protecting Primates on Giving Day for Apes – October 8, 2024
The Lwiro Primate Fund supports Lwiro Primates Rehabilitation Center, in its mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and care for primates who have fallen victim to illegal poaching, trafficking in endangered species, or habitat destruction. Located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Center offers sanctuary to chimpanzees, monkeys, and other wildlife.
Illegal hunting of chimpanzees for meat, capturing juvenile chimps to sell as pets, and deforestation are driving the chimpanzee closer to extinction. The people of LPRC work tirelessly to give these animals a second chance at life, but their efforts don’t stop there. They are committed to educating communities, training wildlife veterinarians, and helping DRC’s park rangers provide stronger wildlife protections.
How You Can Help: Giving Day for Apes – October 8, 2024
We invite you to join us for Giving Day for Apes on October 8, 2024—a special day where supporters from around the world come together to help protect these extraordinary animals. Your donations during this global day of giving will directly impact the lives of the primates at Lwiro, providing the care they need to recover and thrive.
Here's how your support makes a difference:
Rescue Operations: LPRC works with Congolese environmental authorities to rescue primates who have been wounded or orphaned by hunters, or held illegally as pets.
Veterinary Care: Each primate that arrives at Lwiro receives urgent medical attention and long-term health care.
Training: LPRC’s veterinary department trains veterinarians in wildlife medicine. To date, LPRC has trained 27 vets from 6 African countries, building capacity in wildlife medicine across the continent.
Sanctuary and Rehabilitation: The team provides a safe, enriching environment where primates can recover and live safely. LPRC currently cares for more than 120 chimpanzees and 110 monkeys.
Conservation Education: LPRC regularly delivers lessons at area schools, runs “Roots and Shoots” after-school programs, and hosts government officials and traditional leaders at the sanctuary to discuss and consider the importance of wildlife conservation to Congo’s future. LPRC’s multi-prong education efforts have reached thousands of people over the years.
